COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Lowndes County soon will be part of a new kind of “farming” that is cropping up across Mississippi. Tennessee-based Silicon Ranch will build two solar farms on 10 acres near Golden Triangle Airport. Construction will begin soon after approval from the Public Service Commission in early June.

The two farms will generate about one point six million kilowatts of electricity which will be sold to T-V-A. That’s enough electricity to fuel about 150 homes a year. Silicon Ranch has almost 60 similar operations across the Southeast, including two in Okolona. The farms will have 5 thousand tracking panels that will follow the sun during the day and then reset at night. They won’t create many jobs but will be operational by this fall.
