AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) -When one door closes another one opens. That’s exactly what’s happened in Amory, just when residents thought French’s Childcare and Development was closing, the Early Learning Academy Program sprouted.

They’ve started all over again and they’re growing in number. The Amory Early Learning Academy Program helps provide educational opportunities to children from infancy all the way to elementary school.

“This is my life long dream, it’s something I’ve always wanted to do as far as helping kids and just being there. This is the foundation for them and we just want to make sure that they’re ready for kindergarten and their life long learning and we’re just excited it’s been great,” said Director Rashmi Poole.

The Gilmore Foundation is a private not for profit grant making organization serving Amory, Monroe County and all of Northeast Mississippi. They saw and need in the community and didn’t hesitate to help out. Education Director Cathy Grace of the Gilmore Foundation says they will be teaching the same curriculum that’s being used in public schools.

“We will have the same curriculum and an integrated curriculum where we’ll have activities that address social emotional development, gross and fine motor skills, art, with cognitive development as far as problem solving and of course a very heavy emphasis on reading and math with a lot of language development,” added Cathy Grace from the Gilmore Foundation.

The center offers a pre K program, a three year old program, a nursery, and a toddler room. Teachers at the center have an AA degree or are working towards their AA degree. Later the center is looking to provide parents with after school programs for children through 2nd grade.

Since the Learning Academy has opened up in the beginning of June, over 40 kids have been enrolled. They’re looking to double that number once school starts.

“Very few people understand the commitment , the dedication and what it is involving to have high quality program for children 12 hours a day, practically everyday a year,” said Grace.
