MABEN, Miss. (WCBI) — One new business may not mean that much to larger towns across Northeast Mississippi. But to smaller towns like Maben, they can make a huge difference.

A new Dollar General opened there in September.

Taxes collected on retail sales during the store’s first three months increased almost 22 percent. For the Webster County town of 800, that means $3,800 more to pay for city services.

Local leaders say most of that comes directly or indirectly from Dollar General because residents are staying closer to home to shop.
