TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – For years, athletes, weekend warriors and people suffering from arthritis have utilized many treatments to ease their aches and pains.
As WCBI’s Allie Martin shows us, there is a new, cool way to speed muscle recovery and it also has applications for skin care and weight loss.

Four months after having a baby, Jimma McGee began an intense workout regimen. The inches came off, but not the weight, until she started cryo therapy. After a week or so, she was four pounds lighter, and noticed a difference after tough workout sessions.

“The recovery is much better, I’m hardly sore ever,” Mc Gee said.

Dr. Erik Goodwin is a Tupelo Chiropractor, who opened Cryo Correct last month.

“Whole body cryo therapy is cold therapy that applies to the entire body. The applications are obviously for pain and inflammation to begin with, so think of tendonitis, bursitis, essentially any itis you can name,” Dr. Goodwin said.

Here’s how it works, after consulting with Dr. Goodwin, the user gets into a chamber, and spends three minutes exposed to freezing nitrogen gas at a temperature of minus 200 plus degrees.

“It wasn’t what I expected, I expected it to be a lot cooler than it was but because there’s no moisture in the air mixing with the nitrogen, it doesn’t feel near as cold,” McGee said.

McGee says there is also an intense feeling of exhiliration.

“I get a huge burst of energy, about an hour after getting in the machine, I feel great, I feel rejuvenated and revived,” she said.

So I decided to give it a try when it was parked at Snap Fitness.

The temperature was never uncomfortable and I did feel more energy throughout the day, even after an intense workout.

Professional athletes and sports teams are using Cryo Therapy, and Country Singer Jason Aldean paid a visit to the chamber when he was in town for a concert recently.

Whatever the application, doctors say cryo therapy boosts metabolism, helping people burn up to 600 calories, with a three minute session.

“The treatment is the equivalent of getting into an ice bath for 45 minutes,” Dr. Goodwin said.

Cryo Therapy was developed in Europe and is relatively new in the United States.
