ACKERMAN, Miss.(WCBI)–In light of problems people in Flint Michigan are experiencing with toxic drinking water customers in one North Mississippi town wont have to deal with bad water coming from their faucet.

A new $1.1 million dollar water treatment plant is under construction in Ackerman.

On West Cherry Street in Ackerman, its out with the old, and in with the new. Its time to do away with the existing water treatment facility that has served the people in the Choctaw County town for well over 4 decades.

“Its just planning for the future. Our present system is 40 t0 50 years old and its time to move on and replace it,” said Mayor Dick Cain/Ackerman.

“Well water is one of our main resources like I said to be healthy in life we need to drink more water. And I think it’s a great thing that we’re getting a new plant to help deal with the water situation that we have around here,” said Stanley Ashford/Ackerman.

From what we understand the latest move has to do strictly with maintenance, the city’s water is tested on a regular basis and monitored on the state level. City leaders there are vowing never to have to deal with whats been happening in Flint.

“Its just a sad case you know like I say, to be in a situation like that. You can just pray for those folks and hope that they overcome it and it gets better. Cause like I say you got to have water if you are going to make it,” said Stanley Ashford.

“We got a CDB Grant, we got an ARC Grant, And a CAP Loan. And the town put in about 37 thousand dollars,” said Mayor Dick Cain.

And so by getting ahead of the game, a plant thats expected to be high tech and more efficient is expected to add a sense of security when it comes to enjoying pure water from the tap.

“Of course we feel like anything that we can do to better the town. Of course we have an excellent source of water, very good water,” said Mayor Dick Cain.

The new Ackerman water treatment plant should be completed sometime in early May.
