Columbus, Miss. (WCBI) — The U.S. Commerce Department says new home and apartment construction numbers soared in June, with a 9.8% increase nationwide.

In the South, there was a 13.5% jump.

In the Golden Triangle, builders say there’s one type of construction that’s on the rise.

“Here in the probably last 4 or 5 years, I think the remodeling market has really picked up a lot more…”, says remodeler Colby Doyle.

Advanced Remodeling and Renovations owner Chris Bailey says people would rather improve on what they have, rather than build new.

“The homeowners….that’s their biggest investment is their home…”, says Bailey, “…they’re wanting to fix it up and keep it and have something to leave behind for their family.”

Other owners say business is through the roof.

“…Up to 2 months ago, we were just staying busy, as busy wanted, but now we can’t even handle it all…”, says Tony Doyle, owner of Tony Doyle Construction, “…its loaded us up.”

Many remodelers tell WCBI they were home builders previously, but turned to the remodeling business when the recession hit and the housing market crashed.

They say this type of work becomes more personal.

“When you’re remodeling, you get to know a lot more people and you do a whole lot more jobs…”, says Colby Doyle, “…the best way to get good work spread around is to work for more people.”

The Commerce Department report also shows a more than twenty eight percent surge in apartment building in U-S, the highest rate since November 1987.
