NOXUBEE CO., Miss. – (WCBI) Noxubee County Schools are open again after that Thursday afternoon storm.

Even before Noxubee County students arrived on their campuses Monday morning, educators and people from the community had a game plan in place, an initiative to help get everyone the assistance they required.

“Fortunately none of the kids were at home at the time of the tragedy. They were all at school. But it is devastating. You’ve lost everything there were one or two adults, parents that were injured so we are also asking our counselors to make sure they talk with the students to see how they are coping,” said Dr. Kevin Jones, Noxubee County Schools Superintendent.

Storm help came by way of a two-pronged approach, some who have lost all they own.

“So we want to make sure that they have uniforms we want to make sure that they have personal hygiene need are met. And we also want to make sure that psychological needs  are met,” said Jones.

“We did talk to a gentleman that went through the tornado, he was actually in the house and I mean he is asking for counseling,” said Cynthia Pulliam, District Social Worker.

The Reed Resources Center in Shuqualak is a central location being used as a drop off point.

“They do have some clothing items  they do have some toiletry. They have tarps to put on houses and things. So everybody is working together to assist everyone that was impacted,” said Jones.

Social Worker Cynthia Pulliam went a step farther.

“We actually went to the local hotel where the displaced families were living to try to get an account of their immediate needs,” said Pulliam.

Dozens of homes were destroyed by the storm. A fund is being set up through the United Way to receive funds to help those displaced by the storm in Noxubee County.
