MACON, Miss. (WCBI) – Absentee voting is running high, in some counties more than others. More than 13 % of Noxubee County voters have turned in absentee ballots to the circuit clerk’s office.

In a county with 9,312 people on the voting rolls, Noxubee Circuit Clerk Freda Phillips says that adds up to 948 absentee ballots so far.

“The main reason that they are coming into the office wanting to vote absentee is because they are giving us the statement that they will be outside the county on election day, required to be at work during the hours of the poll opening or else age 65 or older or else a student in school.”

The Mississippi Secretary of State’s office says the average percentage of absentee votes cast in an election is5 to 6 percent.

Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann says a high number of absentee ballots raises concern in his office because of the high potential for fraud.

The deadline to vote in person on an absentee ballot is noon Saturday at your county’s circuit clerk’s office. Mail in ballots must be received by close of business on Monday.
