NOXUBEE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — The testing of tornado sirens rang across Noxubee County.

The Emergency Management Agency sounded 13 new sirens at noon on Saturday, to make sure they were working properly.

A $295,000 grant from FEMA allowed Noxubee County to purchase the sirens in light of the April 11, 2013 tornado that destroyed many businesses and homes throughout the county.

You can find some of the sirens located near Noxubee County High School, Brooksville Police Department and the town Shuqualak.

“I thought they were very loud. It’s about 200 feet from my place of business kind of made my ears ring a little bit,” says David Estes.

“We didn’t have anything before but now we’ve at least got these for outside, especially to be real good. It was clear we could hear very well,” says Billy Whitehead.

When sound, each siren cycles for 3 minutes.
