TUPELO, Miss. (AP) — Officials say construction of the new Tupelo Police headquarters is on schedule.

A local newspaper reports West Brothers Construction workers began forming the rebar centers of pillars earlier this week. In the coming days, forms will be built around the reinforcement rods and concrete poured.

Police Chief Bart Aguirre says once work is done on the pillars, the stairwells and the elevator shaft, things will appear to move a lot faster.

The city broke ground on the $10 million, 34,000-square-foot police headquarters in early April. The first 10 weeks of the project were dedicated to giving the two-story building a stable foundation. That included boring 2-foot diameter, 20-foot-deep holes and packing them with crushed stone.
