OKOLONA, Miss. (WCBI) — The final resting place for more than 300 civil war soldiers will be dedicated this weekend.

The Okolona Confederate Cemetery will hold a special memorial ceremony Saturday.

For the last three years, a committee has been working Okolona to renovate the cemetery, where the graves of 318 unknown soldiers remain. The soldiers buried in the cemetery are from 13 different states.

“It is important, and it is sacred that we take care of these graves, anywhere. You know, not just here in Okolona, but anywhere that there is a graveyard,” Sherry Ray with Daughters of the Confederacy said.

“You would be surprised the number of people that stop in here that are touring the country,” Okolona resident Walter Chandler said.

The memorial dedication of the ceremony is set for 8 p.m. Saturday.
