OKOLONA, Miss.(WCBI)–Snowy weather conditions have caused serious power outages leaving thousands of customers with no power early Thursday morning. Hard hit by outages….Okolona.

Thousands were without power in the Chickasaw County area, thats excluding Okolona where two to three hundred residents were left without heat. After leaving Chickasaw County, WCBI News caught up with one Four County work crew that was out and about in the Mt. Pielier area of Clay County.

“Well there has been a lot of snow accumulation on the limbs so due to that weight limbs been breaking. Interfering with our power lines and causing a lot of outages pretty much,” said Jaron Andrew/Four County EPA.

“I was actually on the phone and was fixin to go fix me a cup of coffee, as soon as I got the cream out the frigerator the lights went out,” said Lakisha Johnson/Okolona.

“Only thing on my mind I wonder how long it was going to take to get it back on. I know all this snow on these power lines and stuff, tree limbs been falling on these power lines,” said James Johnson/Okolona.

James Johnson was able to use a shovel to remove snow from his driveway. But just across town on Jefferson Street, Lakisha Johnson’s newborn baby Rhyan needed to be kept warm. Not having a shovel for her driveway, she had to be resourceful.

“I had to put like 6 gallons of hot water and mark my track where I was going through just to get up the hill. Cause I had made a big mess in the yard,” said Lakisha Johnson.

While out and about in neighborhoods of Okolona we watched adults digging out from the snow, and children out of school making that last snow person before the white stuff melts in the February sunshine. They seem to not mine dealing with the beautiful white fluffy snow.

“Well not really, like only thing concern me is about the TV. I couldn’t see the TV, I was watching the news when it went off. Yeah I believe it was you all,” said James Johnson.

“Its rough, I ain’t never been in this type of weather, not this much snow,” said Lakisha Johnson.

One option being discussed are warming shelters. City hall, First baptist Church, and the National Guard Armory are being considered to accommodate customers without heat.

Electric Power Association of Mississippi figures indicate, that at the peak of the storm, more than30,000 meters were without service.
