STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — In about two years time, Starkville will be home to an immense storm shelter.

Oktibbeha County supervisors today accepted a more than $3 million FEMA grant.

The grant money will go toward constructing a concrete storm shelter, which will be capable of housing more than 3,000 individuals.

FEMA will cover 90 percent of the costs, with Oktibbeha County covering the remaining expenses.

The future shelter is also considered a multi-purpose facility, and could be used for recreational events, training and a number of other purposes.

Officials say the design and construction phases should take a maximum of one year each, but construction would begin immediately after the design phase is finalized.

Supervisors also in a second motion approved hiring Biloxi-based JBHM Architecture to handle the design phase.
