MABEN, Miss.(WCBI)–It’s a dangerous game. But Oktibbeha County fire investigators believe someone is setting fires in the county.

For the last three days firefighters have been battling brush and forest fires in the western parts of Oktibbeha County.

Wild fires are burning in Oktibbeha County and there seems to be no end in sight. Sunday morning around ten, firefighters were dispatched to Hawkins Road for a grass fire. When they arrived, there were multiple fires at that location. Investigators are calling these rash of fires suspicious.

“You know its not just in one particular area its spread out down through the roads, different spots. These roads involved hawkins Road, Pierce Road, Artesia Road, and Oswalt Road,” said Chief Wayne Yeatman/Maben VFD.

With assistance from Sturgis, Longview, Reform, and Mathiston Fire Departments, since the weekend firefighters have been cautious as they battle these wild fires in the heat of the day.

“We got called back out there Monday morning as well as Monday night as well as this morning. We have over 14 hours into this fire,” said Wayne Yeatman.

Thankfully no homes are damaged. Fire fighters continue their efforts aimed at controlling and extinguishing these fires while keeping themselves safe in the process.

“Woods fires are just as dangerous as a house fire. Firefighters can get trapped in the woods fire just as well as in a house fire,” said Wayne Yeatman.

Anyone with information concerning these suspicious fires are asked to call the Oktibbeha County Sheriff Department.
