OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI) — An Ole Miss grad student is the first in the state to take home a prestigious teaching fellowship.

Jennifer Fancher Peralta of Mooreville is the winner of the Knowles Science Teaching Foundation fellowship.

The 5-year $175,000 grant is designed to encourage teachers to educate the next generation in math and science.

Peralta can use the money for professional development courses, and travel to meet with other fellowship winners.

95 percent of the grant winners stay in the science and math education field after the fellowship expires.

Peralta will be a teacher at Oxford High School this fall.
