HOULKA, Miss. (WCBI) — Members of a church in Houlka is serving others through a two acre garden. Pastor Jacob Samuell and church members at Houlka Church of Nazarene have a natural idea to serve their community.

“It was just the Lord who put it on our hearts and we just want to be obedient to Him. I’ve never really done gardens so it was a new thing for me but we had several in the church that had it all kind of fell into place,” says Jacob Samuell.

The garden is full of vegetables like okra, green tomatoes and zucchini. It even has it’s first watermelon.

Once these vegetables and fruits are ready, the congregation picks them and gives away the produce to needy people in the community.

“That’s what we’ve called to do so we’re trying to our objective is to actual be a church and do what God expects churches to do,” says Samuell.

Samuell says help from volunteers is what keeps the garden growing strong.

“We’ve had a lot of teens that have come and helped out and several of their parents and just other ones in the church,” says Samuell.

Sixteen year old, Walker Winter says helping others is what it’s all about.

“I think another big part of it is just all of us coming together as a body of Christ body of believers working in the garden,” says Walker Winter.

Winter enjoys working alongside his church family but is also looking forward to the final product.

“There’s a lot of okra and I’m looking forward to fried okra,” says Winter.

As these church members watch their garden grow, they have faith this labor of love will feed the hungry in more ways than one.

The church plans to grow pumpkins for the fall.
