WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) — In order to protect those valuable Christmas purchases that were given as gifts this holiday season, law enforcement personnel are warning the public, be careful what bits of information is posted on social media.

Excited over Christmas gifts, especially the large expensive ones, many can’t seem to resist the temptation of displaying those purchases on social media for friends to see.

“This stuff is being advertised right there on Facebook, Twitter, and these other accounts. And you got people out there that’s watching this. And once they post on these we’re gone to grandmas house in another state away, you left yourself wide open for a breaking and entering of your home,” said Eddie Scott/Clay County Sheriff.

“My rule of thumb is, be careful with your location if you are going to post things on social media to do it several hours later after you’ve left the location. Always do that especially with my children in mind,” said Elizabeth Williams/Gulfport.

The display of that beautiful gift on the internet just could send up a red flag attracting a would-be thief.

“You know you want to show the kids and their parents, but I try to stay away from that this year,” said Williams.

“Yeah, I got something for Christmas but I didn’t post it on Facebook. I don’t think you should put that on facebook because a lot of stuff is happening,” said Edna Ewing/West Point.

There was a time when the law enforcement community cautioned residents by saying don’t leave large boxes for roadside trash pickup… now they are telling us, be mindful when showing those gifts to the world.

“But these are people, and crooks are watching this stuff. And again, we advise our people to be careful,” said Scott.

Just as expensive holiday gifts should not be posted online, avoid revealing holiday plans as well.
