STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) -When disasters strike our area, we usually have no shortage of people willing to help. But often those volunteers lack training to deal with the emergencies. And in the aftermath of a disaster there isn’t much time to bring people up to speed.

Oktibbeha County’s OSERVS has begun a program to train volunteers before they are needed. Thursday, the organization held a “preparathon” aimed at training volunteers to respond after severe weather.

“In a disaster we have a lot of people volunteering. But when a disaster hits, we don’t have time to train the people. We need to have the people trained before disaster. We want people to come in to volunteer, where we can train them in some of the actions they will be doing.”

If you would like to find out how to volunteer with OSERVS, you can go online to http://www.oservs.com/, or call (662) 384-2200
