TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) -A curfew is in effect for parts of Tupelo and Lee County this evening as crews work to restore power to those in the path of Monday’s tornado. WCBI’s Alyssa Martin joins us with more:

In fact, the curfew affects those areas still without power. In all there are nearly 7 thousand homes in Lee County without electricity and officials want to be sure work crews have enough room to get in and out of the neighborhoods.

This evening, Tupelo mayor Jason Shelton was joined by city , county and state officials as the public was asked to stay away from the affected areas.

“The traffic was so backed up today that the first responders and utility workers couldn’t get to where they needed to be to do their job so if we can alleviate that traffic problem that will expedite the solution for everyone in getting power restored to these neighborhoods and business districts,” said Shelton. “The biggest driver to these outages are five TVA transmission facilities located around the mall that were damaged, there were five crews working on those facilities to get them up and running.”

The Auburn area in North Lee County is also under a curfew. Officials encourage everyone to be patient as the recovery and rebuilding process gets underway. In Tupelo I’m Alyssa Martin, we will send it back to you.
