STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s high school prom season and local authorities are speaking to students on how to have a fun, but safe weekend.

Officers from the Starkville Police Department visited Starkville High to talk with juniors and seniors on how to have a safe prom night.

The hot topic was drinking and driving.

Police cautioned students not to participate in underage drinking and also not to ride with someone who has been drinking.

Officers say the month of April is often a deadly one for students.

“This month alone accounts for over 45% of deaths in teens just because it’s a prom month and due to alcohol, so it’s very important to let them know that this is a real problem and a real issue and something that can end their life or seriously injure them for life,” said Starkville Police Officer, Tyler Davis.

Police visit the local high schools each year to educate students during prom season.
