Starkville, Miss (WCBI) — When living in a college town, new faces pop up with every semester.

But sometimes, those faces bring along some unwanted trouble.

“It’s like a melting pot, you have all different types of people that come to your city…you never know what you have here…”, says Starkville Police Chief Frank Nichols, “…but we deal with it accordingly.”

Police in every college town know that seeing new faces all the time means many new back stories.

“Anything that they will be bringing with them, what they did where they came from, so they kind of have a clean slate, but a lot of them bring baggage with them”, said Oxford Police Chief Joey East.

East also explained that many of the criminals that come into town aren’t students or from the area.

He also stressed that students must be aware of their surroundings because many of the criminals will prey on victims, as in follow them home or watch the residence.

Police know there’s a local crime element, just as in any town.

That is why Nichols says all local law enforcement stay in close contact, share information, and work together to solve cases.
