Video: Possible Spice Related Death In Lowndes County

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Lowndes County investigators say the death of a 33 year-old Lowndes County man could be related to the synthetic drug Spice.

Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant says the unidentified man was taken to Baptist Golden Triangle Hospital, in Columbus, on Sunday after reportedly smoking Spice.

The man eventually became unresponsive. He died Monday evening.

The cause of death remains unknown, but it is being treated as Spice-related.

An autopsy will be performed Tuesday morning.

According to Merchant, there have been no confirmed deaths directly related to Spice from an autopsy by the state medical examiner.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reports from April 2nd through the 20th there were 317 reports of spice related emergency room visits.

In the WCBI viewing area, MSDH says spice related E.R. visits have been reported in Clay, Kemper, Lafayette, Lowndes, Monroe, Montgomery, Neshoba, Noxubee, Oktibbeha, and Winston Counties.
