COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — A nationally known cultural preservationist and author was in town today to discuss the importance of preserving African American Historical sites. Dr. Alferdteen Harrison brought her message of identifying and preserving the sites to the Columbus Lowndes Public Library.

Harrison says it is important to preserve these sites, so that future generations will be able to have a physical connection with past events. But to do so the community has to be “spiritually invested” in the project. They must be willing to be financially back the preservation efforts, and the public must be educated and motivated to appreciate the history that these sites and buildings represent.

Dr. Harrison’s visit was part of the Library’s recognition of Black History Month
