WASHINGTON (WCBI) — In a sweeping endorsement for privacy, the Supreme Court ruled that authorities must have a warrant to search personal mobile devices such as cellphones.

In a unanimous vote, justices ruled these devices do not fall into the same category as wallets, briefcases and vehicles.

The case stems from two cases in which suspects were convicted based on information found during an initial search of mobile devices.

The ruling — which is a blow for law enforcement — could set a new standard for privacy cases in the future.
