Video: Proposed Tupelo Budget Includes Pay Hike For Workers, No Tax Hike

TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – Tupelo’s proposed budget has no tax increase, or debt, and includes a pay hike for city employees.

Those are a few of the highlights of the proposed 2016 city budget.  The budget includes 5 thousand additional dollars for the Plant A Seed program,  an additional 179 thousand dollars for operations at the Aquatic Center, and a two percent pay raise for city workers.

“Our departments, like Tupelo Water and Light, the Coliseum Commission, the different , specialty, entities, are competing with both private and other governmental entities for the men and women, talent that operates those departments, so we have to have a competitive wage in the city of Tupelo,” said Mayor Jason Shelton.

According to state law, the 33 million dollar budget has to be approved by September 15th.
