NETTLETON, Miss. (WCBI) – The Public Service Commissioner for the Northern District of Mississippi says residents should be aware of a scam targeting utility customers.  Brandon Presley says his office has received a call from a Pontotoc resident who was contacted by a person who identified himself as an employee of a utility company.

The scammer allegedly told the resident that they were behind on their electric bill and they faced immediate cut off, unless they paid the bill over the phone. Presley says utility companies will never call customers who are behind on their payments.

“They usually use a written notice so we want to warn people that this is a scam, these calls are not coming from your local power company they are coming from folks who are just too sorry to work, and they’re trying to milk money out of Mississippians.  And so we want folks to be aware of this, don’t fall for it, if you think you’re behind on your electric bill, call your power company.”

Presley says anyone who gets a similar call should also contact his office.
