Neshoba County, Miss. (WCBI) — Along with the gubernatorial race, the state treasurer position is also up for grabs and two Republicans gave their last statements before the primary next Tuesday.

David McCrae and Incumbent Lynn Fitch both spoke Thursday at the Neshoba County Fair.

One of the big issues discussed was the state’s college savings program that was temporarily suspended by Finch.

Here is what both candidates had to say about the program.

“There are families all across Mississippi who are working two jobs and yet they still can’t afford the college savings program Lynn Fitch promotes…”, says McRae, “…we need to get in and make sure this is affordable and the first step to do that is coming in and comply managing that fund.”

“I couldn’t, on my watch, allow the taxpayers to have to bail that program out…”, says incumbent Treasurer Finch, “..so it was suspended until we could bring in an actual audit team and look at it. And once we did, we determined that we could reopen it. We have to price it differently, contracts have to be done correctly, and its now open and ready for people to purchase it.”

The winner of the primary will join Democrat Viola McFarland in the race for state treasurer.
