Video: Rescuers Honored
PICKENS COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)-The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers salutes three rescuers for saving a man that nearly drowned last month.
Pickensville firefighters Jerry and Terry McCool, and Gordan McGlawn of Alabama Fish and Game are being honored for their hard work. On a cold December morning, the three responded to a 911 call that three duck hunters were in trouble on the Tenn-tom below Bevill Lock and Dam. One of the hunters had fallen out of their boat and into the water.
The man was in the water over an hour and a half before rescuers could reach him and pull him out of the waterway. The hunter said his body was paralyzed by the cold water. Had he not been wearing a life-jacket he would have drowned.
The hunter recovered after treatment for hypothermia at Pickens County Medical Center.
First responders remind everyone that life-jackets are an absolute must for survival from hypothermia in cold water exposure. Communication equipment such as cell phones and proper planning are also critical for safe boating on the waterway.
