Mantachie, Miss. (WCBI) — Mantachie residents continue to try and wrap their heads around the violence that happened in their own back yard.

Mantachie Police chief Mark Roberts said yesterday that this was the first homicide in the city since the 1970s.

“I just never expected it to hit a little town like Mantachie…”, said resident Jack Turner, “…you just can never really tell nowadays.”

The reaction was similar to many other’s in Mantachie Thursday following the murder of Andre Taylor this past Monday.

While the suspects have been arrested and charged with capital murder, some people are still shaken about what happened.

“It was [kind of] scary…”, says resident Donna Pitts, “…because the law was over by the bank with the spotlights and everything and we didn’t know what was going on.”

While it’s the first homicide in nearly five decades, law enforcement arrested all 5 suspects within 48 hours.

“Anytime a crime is committed, that first 24 to 48 hours are vital because information is fresh, witnesses, their recollection are a lot fresher…”, says Itawamba County Sheriff Chris Dickinson, “…if we can get something wrapped up in that time frame, we have a much better chance of getting a good prosecution from that and allowing the district attorney’s office to do what they do.”

The Itawamba County Sheriff’s Department does not expect any more arrest and their investigation is moving forward.

Right now, ballistics tests are being done on bullets and guns found at the scene.

All of the suspects charged will be held without bond.

The next terms for Circuit Court in Itawamba County when prosecutors will be able to present evidence to a grand jury will be October 12th.
