NEW HOPE, Miss. (WCBI) — It was about 6:15 Thursday evening when a twister ripped through parts of Lowndes County.

One of the hardest hit areas is the Lakeover neighborhood in New Hope.

Now, residents are busy cleaning up the debris.

“It was an experience,” said resident Eric Hill.

Hill and his family were at their Lakeover home when Thursday’s tornado came tore through.

“First tornado for me. It was different. I’ll tell you that. I think it shook my kids up a little bit,” said Hill.

They took the warnings seriously and hid from the twisting winds.

“It was a blessing, we were blessed. I don’t believe I have any major damage, I mean other than trees falling down on the sides on the back side of the house but I mean everybody was safe,” added Hill.

Now, The Hill’s along with several other families spent Friday cleaning up debris.

“Pretty much all the neighbors gathered up together, we’re getting everything cut-up and hauled off,” said Hill.

Jeff Nagy also lives in Lakeover.

He says his house had minor damages, so he’s lending a hand to help those around him.

“Just helping everybody, going house to house, we’re going to make the circle and try to get it as back to normal as we can,” said Nagy.

Nagy says although the situation isn’t good, it could have been worse.

“You know, I slept in my own house last night and had running water this morning, it’s all good. Little bit of lumber and some shingles and we can put it all back together,” added Nagy.

The National Weather Service survey team has been on the ground surveying the damage.
