WINSTON COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Saturday kicked off the start to rifle season for deer hunters.

We spoke with some hunters to see how the season is looking.

Winston County Hunter, Jerry Daniel is prepping his hunting equipment and two sons for the opening day of deer season.

Like Daniel, hunters are swarming to deer stands across Mississippi in hopes of bagging a big buck.

“It’s been pretty good. I’ve heard of a lot of deer getting killed and just been a lot of deer this year,” says Jerry Daniel.

Daniel says no matter how a hunter feels about the upcoming season, it’s important to be ready.

“Make sure our fields is ready. We get them planted disc up and all that. Get our camouflage and our orange and all that and we’re ready,” says Daniel.

In Lowndes County, Fork N Road Deer Processor is experiencing the start of rifle season as hunters bring in their kill of the day.

“It’s just wide open right now. These guys that come in and do the skinning they’ve been skinning deer since eight o’clock this morning so it’s great. That’s what we’ve been waiting on,” says Jack Larmour.

Owner Jack Larmour says this is just the beginning of many hard working days ahead.

“We start at seven and it’s usually 8:30 to nine before we get off. Then I come in at 5AM and do all the other stuff getting ready for those guys to come in,” says Larmour.

As hunters take to the stands this opening weekend, Daniel wants to remind hunters of all ages, to stay safe.

“Always know when you shooting towards and wear your orange and just be safe and watch what you do. Be careful and always let someone know where you are,” says Daniel.

Rifle season goes through December 1st. The season will then re-open December 16-January 21.
