JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) – Efforts to extend the popular Columbus Riverwalk 14 miles to Columbus Air Force Base clear a hurdle.

The state House has approved Representative Jeff Smith’s bill to provide the first $5 million of what he hopes will be $25 million over five years for the project. It now goes to the Senate.

The city also is lobbying the state’s congressional delegation in the name of supporting Columbus Air Force Base.

City and county leaders want to add playgrounds, rest centers and other features at the Columbus Lock and Dam, Duane Hayes State Park, the Highway 373 entrance to the base and other spots along the Tenn-Tom Waterway.
