TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — A Saltillo man accused of taking a person hostage, shooting at deputies, and domestic violence is in jail tonight on a $1 million bond.

32-year-old Harold Scruggs, who also goes by Dee Malette, is charged with aggravated assault, kidnapping, domestic violence, simple assault on a police officer and three counts of aggravated assault on a police officer.

Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson says deputies found an injured woman after answering a call Friday evening.

Scruggs hid in a shack, shot at deputies and later escaped to his County Road 1389 house.

Johnson says that’s where Scruggs took a 19-year-old woman hostage and shot at deputies once again.

Eventually, tear gas was used and the SWAT team arrested Scruggs.

Johnson says the high bond is justified.

“The mere fact that he had six hours or more to cooperate with authorities and failed to do so, and him fleeing from crime scene, of original crime, to a wooded shack, to another place, all while law enforcement is pursuing him shows a flight risk,” Johnson said. “I think we can stand our ground when it comes to that.”

Johnson says Scruggs has a lengthy criminal record .
