SALTILLO, Miss. (WCBI) — Bryson Burks loves helping his mother, Chris. Today, they’re making desserts for a family get together.

This holiday season will be bittersweet for the Burks family. Earlier this year, Brett Burks passed away after a short battle with kidney disease. During his treatment, Brett took regular dialysis treatments in Birmingham. The stress of his Dad’s illness caused young Bryson to have seizures and other medical issues.

But through all that, the Saltillo Elementary fifth grader found out that children also have to take dialysis treatments, and he wanted to do something to help out.

“My Dad, he was a humungous Grateful Dead fan, biggest one alive. So we said, how can we relate that to our foundation, how about Kidney Head?”

So the “Kidney Head” Foundation was born. For Bryson and his mom, it’s a chance to help families with sick kids and honor the memory of husband and father.

Bryson remembers how the frequent trips to Alabama impacted his family.

“It took away a lot of money, it took away from grocery money, it took away a whole bunch of the stuff we have and so we were grateful, our family gave us some money to help us get through.”

The CREATE Foundation will take donations for the “Kidney Head” Foundation. Bryson hopes to help some sick kids have a bright Christmas. He shares the wish list of one child.

“She four things on it, she has a new kidney and she’s non transplantable, so she can’t get a kidney. That’s the first thing, next is press on fingernails, next is costume jewelry and next thing is Beats headphones.”

With the help of his mom, Bryson is taking his cause to social media. He is encouraging people to spread the word and become “Kidney Head” fans.

And Bryson hopes his passion helping sick kids will inspire others to do something great.
