LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)- Lowndes County School Superintendent Lynn Wright wants to open up a career training center building for students in Lowndes County.

“We have so many students who we feel fall through the cracks that could benefit so much from career tech training. What we’d love to do is have a centralized sit, cause we’re limited right now. We only have at each campus, anywhere from 3 to possibly 4 courses that can be offered on each campus and those are not available to students that are on the other campuses,” said Wright.

Teens will learn the basics at a central location, and earn community college credit. East Mississippi Community College will handle advanced training.

“Ideally somewhere in the location of Columbus Nissan, there’s some properties available there which would be within the 10-12 mile radius of each of our schools,” said Wright.

From learning how to tune cars, to wielding exhaust pipes, the new tech center will offer a variety of courses to students and they actually open to the idea.

“Culinary Arts, graphic design, early childhood education just to name of few of them. We surveyed 1,448 students. 994 of them said they would go to a vocational center if it was not located on the campus of another so what that kind of number we feel like we could fill a vocational school,” said Career Tech Director Percy Lee.

The project will cost an estimated $15 million and serve around 500 students. Wright believes it will be worth it in the end.

“We know it’s a big project it’s tough, but if we’re gonna be all we can be in Lowndes County, we have to do all we can to ensure our students are successful in the future,” said Wright.

The school districts goal is to have the career tech center open in 2015.
