LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) —  Bond is set at more than $1 million for a convicted felon accused of killing his girlfriend’s 4-year-old son.

Patrick Chambers, 27, made his initial appearance in Lowndes Justice Court Wednesday afternoon on charges of murder and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Judge Ron Cook set a $1 million bond for murder and $10,000 for the weapons case.

Chambers is charged with the Monday morning shooting of 4-year-old Brayden Barksdale. Chambers moved to Lowndes County a few months ago from North Dakota and was living with the child’s mother, Amy Richardson, at the Sobley Road home where the shooting occurred.

The child was shot in the head with a .45-70 lever action hunting rifle. Chambers told authorities the child accidentally shot himself but an autopsy said that wasn’t what happened, leading to the murder charge.

Chambers previously served jail time in North Dakota for a burglary conviction.

Meanwhile,  the was laid to rest today.

Family and friends gathered to say goodbye to little Brayden Barksdale at Lowndes Funeral Home. Mourners attended a visitation before the funeral began.

Graveside services were held at Murrah’s Chapel Cemetery.

Barksdale is survived by his father, Jeffery Barksdale, and mother Amy Richardson, along with a brother and sister.

The brother and sister are from Amy Richardson’s only marriage.

According to court records, a Lowndes County Chancery Court judge awarded her custody of Brayden following a trial last summer because she was working in a good job in North Dakota at the time and Barksdale was a paraplegic as a result of a traffic accident after Brayden was born.

Investigators say she apparently moved back to Lowndes County last fall and Chambers came with her.
