UNDATED, Miss. (WCBI)-You’ve heard the story by now…a group of World War II veterans from Mississippi flew to Washington D.C. on an honor flight, only to find the gate closed. Now, a navy veteran from Starkville on that trip has returned home.

Keith Gilmore served in the South Pacific during World War II. He and 90 other veterans and their caregivers made the free honor trip to the nation’s capital. The national mall was closed to the public because of the government shutdown. Several members of congress moved the barricades aside to let the veteran’s in.

“Highlight probably was breaking into the World War II Veteran’s Memorial. Course it was all locked up and signs, but congressmen from South Mississippi and other congressmen disobeyed the park rules and got the ribbon cut, and we went on in anyway. They finally got us out of there and then they did lock the place up,” Keith Gilmore said.

Mr. Gilmore says the veterans also received a warm welcome when they arrived back home to Mississippi last night. You can hear more from Gilmore tomorrow on Mid-Morning with Aundrea.
