MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)-Another new shape is rising over the Smithville landscape as the Monroe County town continues to rebuild from a devastating tornado two years ago.

Century Construction has begun building a tornado proof dome that will double as a gymnasium and rec complex and storm shelter on the campus of Smithville High.

The dome is the first of its kind in the state.

The Smithville school campus along with about 80 percent of the town were destroyed by the April 27th tornado.

State and federal officials decided to replace the old gym with the new shelter to increase safety.

A similar one is planned for East Webster, which was destroyed in the same series of storms.

And similar domes are planned for the Hatley and Hamilton school campuses in Monroe County.
