WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) –  Another round of elections is finally over and freshly minted officials are preparing to take office while those on the way out begin a new life after politics.

“First of all Robbie & I are friends. The fact that we didn’t run against  one another makes the transition really, really easy,” says Outgoing West Point Mayor Scott Ross.

Ross has been the Mayor of West Point for the last 8 years but now he says it’s time to move on.

“Self-imposed term limits for politicians, I think, are appropriate. It’s always good to have a new viewpoint, new blood so to speak, coming in. I think it’s healthy for local governments to have turn over,” says Ross.

Newly-elected West Point Mayor Robbie Robinson says he couldn’t ask for a better transition period at City Hall.

“All of the folks here, not only the Mayor himself but all of the employees have been very helpful, very cooperative. It’s just been, so far, a smooth transition,” says Robinson.

While serving his two terms as Mayor, Ross has facilitated many projects including beautifying the downtown area, bringing in the CVS Drugstore and most recently, bringing Yokohama Tire to West Point.

“Congressman Nunnelee sent me a note that said: It’s not how you start but how you finish. So you finish strong and with Yokohama coming in, I think the future of West Point is just incredibly bright,” says Ross.

Ross says leaving office is bitter sweet but he’ll be just down the street if he’s ever called upon for advice.

Robinson will officially become West Point’s Mayor at the beginning of July.
