Video: Starkville House Fire

STARKVILLE, Miss.(WCBI)–A Starkville man and at least one of his pets escaped their burning home Wednesday night.

Starkville firefighters responded to the blaze on Douglas McArthur Drive around seven thirty, it took the responders about 20 minutes to put the fire out. The home was nearly destroyed. The living room, carport, and kitchen sustained smoke and or fire damages.

Fire Marshal Stein McMullen tells us, homeowner Dwayne Shurden was not hurt, but his dog died in the flames. A cat also in the house at the time of the fire can not be found and may have escaped unharmed.

Shurden was apparently grilling at the time, but investigators are not sure what caused the fire that remains under investigation.
