STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Starkville residents took to the street this afternoon in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King.

The annual NAACP MLK march, which ended with a surprise twist, kicked off at 1:30 p.m. on Washington Street.

Marchers made their way down Jefferson and Jackson streets before looping around to Main Street.

Ordinarily, the march would proceed to the Oktibbeha County Courthouse, but this year ended up at the new Unity Park.

Event organizers unveiled civil rights monuments which each honor civil rights leaders.

“We have a ways to go, but I think there has been tremendous progress,” Jeanne Marszalek with the Unity Committee said. “And I’m so proud to be part of what we have done in Starkville.”

Among those honored by the plaques include King, former Governor William Winter and Dr. Douglas Connor.
