CLAY COUNTY, Miss. – Gator hunting season in Mississippi is underway, and a pair of Starkville residents are already off to a good start.

Mark Stovall and Shane Kelly harvested a large alligator at Tibbee Creek Friday night.

He’s 12 feet, 8 inches long, and 660 pounds – believed to be one of the heaviest gators ever caught in Mississippi.

Stovall and Kelly spent nearly three hours wrestling the gator, until they were able to kill him.

They plan to take the gator to Birmingham on Monday, to start the process of preserving the hide and mounting his head.
