STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — The controversial transfer of $474,000 in old school bond funds is back on track in Starkville.

The school board agreed today to accept the money to repair the aging Greensboro Center. That was the purpose of the original bonds approved by voters in 1986.

The city inadvertently collected excess taxes to repay the bonds but only recently discovered the funds. Mayor Parker Wiseman didn’t follow proper procedures to return the money to the school district, which set off a month-long tempest in city government.

“The Greensboro Center is still in great need of renovation. It has asbestos issues, structural issues with a beam that has slipped and needs to be shored up which is quite expensive to complete,” Starkville School District Superintendent Lewis Holloway said.

Once aldermen approve the transfer and the proper hearings are held, the money will go to schools.
