STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Disaster strikes everyday but you never think it will happen to you.

What started out as an ordinary night on Louisville Street turned tragic when Will Parfitt and his seven roommates awoke to a raging fire early Wednesday morning.

“I went to bed at about twelve that morning and woke up at about 2:15, 2:30 to one of my roommates who was banging on my door and screaming all throughout that house ‘Get out! Get out! There’s a fire! There’s a fire,'” said Parfitt.

Will and his roommates made it out of the house safely but unfortunately, they lost most of their belongings and none of them had renter’s insurance

“Now I know. I’ve learned my lesson like get renter’s insurance because you never know, you don’t ever expect to have a fire,” added Parfitt.

Many college students do not have renter’s insurance simply because they do not know it is necessary to have.

Renter’s insurance is fairly inexpensive and can help replace your stolen or destroyed items.

“In a situation where you have a loss, a fire, a tornado, or whatever I mean you can actually get a replacement cost on your stuff,” said Bubba Cole with Farm Bureau Insurance.

Cole encourages renters to purchase insurance.

“Go get it because you never know what’s going to happen,” added Cole.

Renter’s insurance costs around $10 a month.
