MISSISSIPPI (WCBI) — Starkville and Tupelo could see a rise in cultural tourism.

The two cities have sites that have recently been added to the national register of historic places.

The National Park Service says the Starkville Colored Cemetery is now listed on the site. The cemetery is located near the Oktibbeha County Courthouse on University Drive.

The spot, which has fallen into disrepair, is the burial site for some of the freed slaves.

Getting the site listed was difficult because no one is really certain who actually owns the property.

In addition to the cemetery, Tupelo’s downtown district was also added to the registry.
