COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – With a week until party primaries, candidates are criss-crossing the state. On Tuesday, State Auditor Stacey Pickering made a stop in Columbus. The two-term Republican faces some opposition in next week’s primary.

Pickering is trying to stay focused on State business and successes in office, but says campaign rhetoric is getting more heated as voting day gets closer.

“Well, this campaign, there’s been allegations and half truths all the way dating back to May, whenever our opponent started making certain allegations, and throughout the Summer those have changed. Those have developed, and then the latest issues that have come out, we addressed last week, and we continue to do so, being up front and honest.”

Pickering faces Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins-Butler in the Republican primary next Tuesday.
