COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — State regulators have slapped a Columbus company with a more than $100,000 fine.

Severstal must pay the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) $135,000 for failing to properly monitor emissions.

The problem stems from the June 2011 expansion of Severstal. The monitors for the second furnace would not work inside the building.

Severstal faces a December deadline for making sure they system works.

In the interim, the company is conducting traditional emission monitoring tests.
