Video: Stories of Survival – Storm Victim Saves Grandchildren in Louisville
LOUISVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — More stories of bravery are being told by those who survived one of the deadliest tornadoes in state history. A Louisville grandfather’s quick actions helped save the lives of his grandchildren.
“We heard something like a train, like a big loaded train,”.
Willie Macon lives on Eiland Avenue. It’s where three people lost their lives after the twister hit. On the day of the storm, he and his wife were caring for his five grandchildren.
“The kids asked me, ‘Poppaw, what are we going to do? Are we going to get in the house?’ So they got their blanket and everything. I said well, we’re going to get somewhere,” says Macon.
The Macon family lived in their home for 43 years. They all gathered in this bathroom to save their own lives. Macon says as he huddled with his family, he saw the roof of his home ripped off.
“I heard the top when it come up. I looked up. I saw really bright sun. It was shining, just a beauty,” says Macon.
Macon says he’d like to rebuild his home but he hasn’t made a final decision. For now, he’s just grateful that his family survived.
He and his wife are currently living with his daughter and granddaughter.
