LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Thursday evening’s severe storms left roads blocked, several trees down and many people without electricity.

The hardest hit area in Lowndes County was New Hope.

As of right now, Lowndes County EMA Director Cindy Lawrence says clean-up efforts will continue on Friday.

Lawrence says the biggest issue first responders have run into is by-standers observing the damage, which slows down their work.

“We have a clear picture, we ask people to please stay out of the area, we know we have power lines down, trees down, we don’t know whether the power lines are energized or not, we just ask people to please stay out of the area. Our responders really need to get in there, moves those damages,” said Lawrence.

Lawrence says so far they have not received any injury reports.
