STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Students at Henderson Ward-Stewart Elementary got a visit from an unusual animal.
“Reading, it’s in our nature” is the theme for the third grade literacy program, and to bring that to life, the students got to see a live alligator.

A gator specialist was on hand to teach the students more about alligators.

The literacy program not only helps with reading skills but also teaches the students about conservation efforts.

“This first month is alligators and crocodiles, so we thought what better to do than bring a live alligator and show them if they do they’re reading and they’re activities related to the books, that they will be able to participate in these activities every month,” said Jessica Tegt, an Assistant Professor at MSU with the extension service.

The school works with the MSU extension service to put on the literacy programs.
